Shelf Pure

How we pick

Shelf Pure publishes independent picks for skincare, hair and body products, drugstore to counter, chosen on one transparent rubric and sorted by who they suit.

What gets on the shelf

Every product has to pass all five:

  1. Sold on Amazon by the brand or a major retailer, in stock, with a listing we can link. Third-party-only listings are out.
  2. A full ingredient list published by the maker, on its site or its label. If we cannot read the list, we cannot write the walk-past note, so it does not go up.
  3. A named active or a named reason. A recognized ingredient (niacinamide, ceramides, salicylic acid, retinol, zinc oxide, urea) or a formulation reason (fragrance-free, sulfate-free, a texture that suits a skin type). A nice smell is not a reason.
  4. A brand that has been on shelves three years or more. No drop-ship labels, no brand of the month.
  5. No claim the maker does not make. A sunscreen, a dandruff shampoo or an antiperspirant is described in the maker's own label words. Nothing here treats, cures or heals anything.

How the shelf is ordered

Within a shelf, every pick is scored on four points, each from 0 to 2.5:

Eight and above is a top pick, six to eight is also good, below six is fine and still carries a reason to buy it. The number orders the list; the page shows the rank and the tier. We do not print a decimal score, because a 9.4 would be an invented precision.

Prices and links

Every price on this site is the maker's list price (MSRP). We never show an Amazon price; the store shows today's. Every buy link goes through our own address first, so a click can be counted, then on to the store. Shelf Pure is reader-supported. If you buy through links on this site, we may earn an affiliate commission at no cost to you.

Images

Scenes on this site are generated illustrations, never product photos, and are captioned as such. We do not use a maker's or a store's images.
